200 Followers? Freebie Time!

I started this blog out of boredom and curiosity last summer, and now I am so excited to have 200 followers! I want to say "thank you" to all my blog readers and fellow writing teachers with this task card freebie. If you teach fourth grade writing (especially in Texas), there's a good chance you'll need to teach your budding writers to differentiate personal narrative writing vs. expository writing at the start of the school year. I hope this set of 12 task cards helps you do just that!

  3. Sarah, I am so glad to know that you are a 4th Grade Writing Teacher in Texas as I am! I teach about 90 students and want to get your help on how to manage record-keeping and daily/weekly assessment info on each individual student while meeting each of their needs and building on strengths. I have taught for a long time and keeping up-date assessments while allowing the information to drive my teaching is such a challenging, overwhelming task every year! Please fill me in by sharing your management system, checklists, forms used, etc. I want to do a better job of keeping track of my kids progress in Writing/Grammar/Spelling. Thanks so much in advance! Love your ideas, Sarah!

    1. Thanks for the kind words, Marsha! I agree it's a challenge to juggle sometimes! My priorities are:

      1. Writing
      2. Grammar
      3. Spelling

We go through the entire writing process every (5 day) week. On Fridays, my students score their writing partner's final draft with a rubric as I walk around and help as needed. (It takes lots of modeling and discussion about the writing traits to help them score accurately!) Scores range from 1-4 to stay consistent with STAAR. I teach grammar mostly through whole group mini-lessons, homework assignments, and writing conferences. I don't spend much class time teaching spelling. They receive their spelling list each Monday, we briefly talk about the pattern, and tests are Fridays. Hope this helps!

  4. Congrats on so many followers and thanks for the freebie! I just found you through Pinterest (a pic of your classroom from last summer). I LOVE finding new 4th grade blogs! I teach all subjects, but writing is my favorite. Come check out my blog if you have time: A Place to Thrive
