Room 314 is Ready to Rock!

It's back to school time for teachers! (I'm sure you've noticed.) This past week, we had our staff retreat. It was truly a blast. It's always exciting to see all my coworkers again after a long break. Everyone looked so refreshed and relaxed, and the day was filled with laughs. Here is my favorite photo from the retreat:

Random and strange... just how I like it. When I wasn't busy taking photos of chicken, I worked tirelessly in my room. I can proudly say that it's ready! The only things missing now are the fourth graders! I probably could have finished up the room in 2 days, but it took me 5 days total since I love to socialize and spend way too much time on things that should take 5 minutes. I'm linking up with Beg, Borrow, Steal to share pics!

The bulletin board version of my Revising vs. Editing Venn Diagram

Read-aloud spot & writing process wall

After taking this picture, I labeled each notebook paper as a different step in the writing process (Step 1: Plan, Step 2: Draft, etc.)

Writer of the Week! Thanks, Pinterest!

Objectives, spelling words chart, & "razzle dazzle" word wall

I'm hoping the red X over each worn out word will send a strong message!

Rules, rewards, and consequences... what the first days of school are all about!

I hope everyone has a fabulous first week of school! For those of you who have already started, I hope it's going well and you still have your voice!

  1. I am literally sitting here by myself saying out loud, "Oh!" at your classroom!! It is fabulous!!! I am going to have to borrow your ideas! I hope you don't mind. I am in love with your Venn diagram board, and your Writer of the Week desk area. (I don't know how I missed that on Pinterest.) Your charts and Razzle Dazzle Words bulletin board are amazing, too!

  10. How do you use the crates that say "Composition Crocodiles", "Write Knights", etc. Is that groups that you have?

    1. I have 4 class periods, and they are nicknamed the composition crocodiles, editing experts, write knights, and grammar gorillas. The crates hold their draftbooks (writing notebooks). :)

    1. I was not smart enough to save them, but I took most of them from word choice lists I found various places on Pinterest!

    1. Thanks for the kind words, Christina! You will love fourth grade. I completely re-did my room last year, and those pics show the result. I bought all my materials from Mardel. I like to double border everything and use fade-proof paper. Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions.

  14. Your room looks awesome! I'm wondering, though...what does the fire marshal say about all that paper on your walls? Almost every classroom I see on Pinterest is literally COVERED with paper...posters, signs, labels, anchor charts...Our fire marshal(in TN)says no more that 20% of the wall can be covered, everything has to be at least 2 blocks from the ceiling, and nothing suspended from the ceiling. She's making me crazy!! lol

  15. Your classroom is beautiful and all materials super helpful. Just curious, are you solely a writing teacher? It looks that way from the sneak peak you gave us.

  16. Do you by chance have a copy of the 8 posters on your narrative and expository bulletin boards? I have inherited a "man's classroom" with nothing! :-) I would love to put up that board.....

    1. I don't have copies of them, but we refer to them every day. It was well worth the time (1 whole day) I spent making them! Be sure to use dry erase marker instead of permanent marker! :)

    2. Love your ideas!!! Is there any way you can take and post individual pictures of the 8 posters? I would like to read them, but they get blurry when I zoom in. Thank you!!!

  18. I am so glad I found your blog! I also teach 4th grade writing, but was told last year 2 weeks before school started...I had taught math and SS the previous 2 years, so needless to say my room felt a little thrown together with writing stuff. I LOVE your room, and will be implementing some of these ideas this year :)
